Doubt has been cast over the future of Kahnawake as a remote licensing jurisdiction after the Canadian minister of justice said this week that the federal government was considering introducing measures - including a ban on payments - to enforce the Canadian Criminal Code which prohibits internet gambling. Many legal observers believe the Code should forbid the Mohawk reserve from licensing online gambling sites but Canada’s Supreme Court is likely to have the final say.
