Under the 2005 Gambling Act, gambling operators no longer have to prove there is sufficient demand for gambling in the local area in order to obtain a premises licence for a new gaming venue. However, operators will still need to obtain planning permission for new and converted premises, and local authorities retain the right to scrutinise local development issues in this regard.
