Officially, gambling is still illegal in China, although exemptions are given to welfare and sports authorities to operate lotteries. In order to curb illegal online gambling and retain the growing numbers of Chinese nationals going abroad to gamble, foreign expertise and investment is being sought. The Beijing Summer Olympics have provided the opportunity for the introduction of new lottery games. AsianLogic Ltd announced a foray into P2P (player-to-player) online poker, with a platform to be launched in September.
